History of Kuliyapitiya Divisional Secretariat

Kuliyapitiya West Divisional Secretary's Division is situated in between Divisional Secretary's Divisions of Udubaddawa, Pannala, Kuliyapitiya East, Panduwasnuwara West, Bingiriya and Panduwasnuwara West in the district of Kurunegala in the North Western Province. According to that it is bounded North by Panduwasnuwara West & Panduwasnuwara East divisional secretaries' divisions, South by Pannala divisional secretaries' division West by Udubaddawa & Bingiriya divisional secretaries' divisions.


Extent of this division is 160.24km. Whole land area of this division is about 16000 hectares. There are 68 Grama Niladhari divisions. While there are 154 villages in the division. Kuliyapitiya West Divisional Secretary's division is situated in the Kuliyapitiya electorate.This division is divided into two local areas in order to more easy administration. They are the following.


1. Kuliyapitiya Urban Council

2. Kuliyapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha



There are 02 sub offices of Kuliyapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha at Deegalla and Murutange. Main town of the division is Kuliyapitiya while Meegahakotuwa and Kithalawa are developing towns.


Total Population of this division is 84923. Agriculture is the main job of the people in this area. In addition to that many people are involved in the industries of pottery, carpentry, fiber, animal hasbandry, cashew enterprises.


Educational level of this area is high. It is a good sign that Kuliyapitya Campus of Waymba University and Kuliayapitiya Technical Collage are situated within the division. Further the, sitiuation of 4 dictions of Govijana Sewa, Zonal Education Office, Base hospital, Office of Divisional Health Medical Office, Courts Complex, Senior Police Suprintendent Office, Police Engineers Office, Labourer Office, Road Development Office, Childcare and Probation Office, all private and government banks, Insuarance co-operation is a  resource of the division. A lot of medium scale industries in the division. We can identify Slimtex as a big scale industry.


Historical Information of Kuliyapitiya West Divisional Secretariat


According to a myth the word, Kuliyapitiya came following the Sinhala words "Kula Aa Pitiya". When we consider the historical background of this division, this division consists of 4 Korales. They are Yatikaha South Korale, Yatikaha North Korale, Katugampola North Korale and Part of Mayurawathi Korale.


There are 76 tanks which belonged to agricultural industry of king Maha Parakramabahu who united the island being in historical Panduwasnuwara kindom. In addition to this there are important historical places in the division such as Kabala Dewalaya, Shaila Bimbaramaya of Embawa, Paththini Dewalaya of Yakarawaththe, Malala Bandara Dewala of Pallewela, Sudarshanaramaya of Dandagamuwa, Tempita Viharaya of Koongahagedara, Tempita Viharaya of layanegama, Rajamaha Viharaya of Annaruwa.
